Intent
At St Matthew's we aim to for our art curriculum to develop creativity, engage and inspire children. We work to equip them with the knowledge and skills to to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. Across the school, pupils will be exposed to a broad range of arts, craft and design. They will develop the skills to be able to think critically about art and design, including their own. Through gaining knowledge of a diverse range of famous artists they will develop an understanding of how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation, exploring artists, architects and designers. In art and design lessons, pupils will be taught how to design and draw, use research and sketches as aides, use a variety of materials and evaluate their art and build their knowledge.
Implmentation
In all year groups a teacher will plan art and design focusing on the knowledge and skills stated in our Art and Design curriculum which compliments the National Curriculum. Our curriculum builds progression so that pupils feel confident to apply skills independently as they move through the school. Skills-based lessons allow children to progress from experimenting with a range of materials to inventing and creating their own pieces of artwork using specific resources and techniques. Through effective teaching and considered sequences of lessons and experiences teachers lead discussions and model the correct skills to pupils. They prived children with opportunities to practice and develop mastery in the key processes of drawing, painting, textile, collage, printing, 3D work and sculpture. They will develop an understanding of the visual elements of art and design: line, tone, texture, colour, pattern, shape and 3D form. Wherever appropriate art and design is linked to other areas of the curriculum and gives pupils opportunities to develop specific art skills. pupils are encouraged to reflect, evaluate and analyse creative works, as well as their own, using the language of art, craft and design. This process is supported by the use of sketch books from year 1 - 6 which gives the children opportunities to pracitce, revisit and review their work.
Through art and design activities we hope to contribute to the development of the whole child, emotionally, spiritually, cognitively and socially. We proudly display pupils' artwork throughout the school in order to motivate and inspire others and to celebrate the wonderful range of artists we have here at St Matthew's
Impact
Children have clear enjoyment and confidence in art and design that they then apply to other areas of the curriculum. Children will ultimately know more, remember more and understand more about art and design demonstrating this knowledge when using tools or skills in other areas of the curriculum and in opportunities out of school.
Children's attainment in art and design is monitored by the class teacher and this informs future lesson planning as well as informing the subject leaders if there is any areas of the curriculum which require further development.
